THE HISTORY

THE HISTORY >

The Country of Origin event by RaceBase began as a casual conversation between two friends in a Sham Tseng pub, eventually evolving into one of Hong Kong’s most entertaining and distinctive trail races. Launched by trail runners Nic Tinworth and Nic Bornman, the event was designed to bring together teams of three—each sharing the same nationality—to compete along a 30km route on Lantau Island.

Nic Tinworth was a central figure in Hong Kong’s trail running community and a co-founder of RaceBase. Known for his passion for building community, Nic introduced countless people to trail running and was celebrated for his welcoming, magnetic presence. His vision for the Country of Origin race—teams of three running together in national costume—reflected his belief in camaraderie, fun, and the shared challenge of the trails.

After a courageous battle with brain cancer, Nic passed away in 2020, but his legacy endures in the events he created and the lives he touched, commemorated by the Tinworth Trail and the ongoing spirit of Country of Origin.
